Southern University Baseball Legend Miles Potier Reflects on Southern Baseball While Mentoring Them

Southern University Baseball has been around for years, becoming the recipient of many achievements, historical moments, and producing legends. Southern University Baseball is a prominent name in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) and the Historical Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). Per Geaux Jag Sports, Southern University has 4 NAIA & HBCU National Championships combined, as well as 18 SWAC Tournament Titles, 10 NCAA Baseball Regional Tournament Appearances, and 30 SWAC Western Titles. Southern Baseball has also produced legendary alumni like Roger Cador, Lou Brock, Rickie Weeks, and Sidney Potier.

Sidney Potier has been a lifelong fan of Southern University. He played baseball at Southern University from 1969 to 1973. As a pitcher, he compiled a record of 24 wins and 2 losses. He led the nation in ERA when he was a starter. He received one of the highest honors as a Southern University athlete, being inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2000.

Potier says, “I played with a lot of great coaches and players. It was a blessing to be a part of a legacy. It means everything to be a Southern Jaguar.”

Sidney Potier also continued his legacy after his playing days at Southern, serving as a mentor for numerous players across Southern University sports.

Potier says, “I’m always here for them. I believe my presence matters. My presence gives them that extra push to get after it every time they take the field.”

According to the New York Amsterdam News, it discussed how HBCU players play with heart and passion, and that events like the HBCU Swingman Classic help many athletes pursue their dream of making it professionally.

Miles Potier gives back to his university with his support, advice, and interactive spirit, helping Southern University remember they are “Still, that school.”
